Advantages compared to other storage technologies

Pumped storage is the most mature energy storage technology, with virtually no technological risk. It currently accounts for 94% of the world’s installed electrical energy storage capacity, with 158 GW in operation.

An option with unique characteristics compared to other storage technologies, among which the following are the most notable:

• Its high performance allows for the installation of larger power outputs (> 1,000 MW) and very high efficiency of the pump-turbine cycle (70% - 80%). Its high operational flexibility allows for almost immediate start-ups, power variations, and changes in operating modes.
• Autonomous start-up capacity without need for external power, allowing the electrical system to restart in case of blackouts.
• Reduced environmental impact thanks to minimal water consumption and the fact that it does not generate emissions nor waste.
• A long lifespan, exceeding 50 years, without any reduction in storage capacity.
